After a Break-In: How to Re-Secure Your NYC Home Fast
A break-in is violating and disorienting. This is the clear order of operations to get your home safe again — starting tonight.
Coming home to a broken door or a ransacked room is one of the worst feelings there is. It’s violating, and it’s hard to think straight. The goal of this guide is simple: give you a calm order of operations so you can get your home safe and lockable again tonight, then harden it so it doesn’t happen twice.
First: Safety and the Record
-
Don’t go in alone if it’s fresh
If the door is open or it looks like it just happened, the intruder could still be inside. Step back out and call 911 from a safe spot.
-
Let police document it
File a report and get the report number — you’ll need it for insurance. Don’t clean up yet.
-
Photograph everything
The forced door, the damaged lock, every disturbed room. Insurance claims live or die on this evidence.
Second: Re-Secure the Entry Points
Once police have cleared the scene and you’ve documented the damage, the home needs to lock again — that night. This is where an emergency locksmith comes in. A forced or drilled lock cannot be trusted, even if it still turns; the mechanism is compromised. Here’s what we typically do on a break-in call:
- Replace any forced or drilled lock on the spot with a new, higher-grade unit.
- Rekey the undamaged locks — if a key was stolen during the burglary, the other doors are exposed too.
- Repair the door and frame enough to latch and lock securely; a temporary board-up if the damage is severe.
- Reinforce the strike plate with longer screws into the frame stud — the single cheapest upgrade against kick-ins.
Third: Make It Harder Next Time
Burglars often return to a home they’ve already breached, or tell others it’s an easy mark. During the repair visit, we assess the weak points and recommend upgrades that actually stop the common NYC and Long Island entry methods:
The commercial standard — far harder to kick or drill than builder-grade locks.
Medeco / Mul-T-Lock resist picking and bumping, and keys can’t be copied without authorization.
Long screws and a steel strike turn a kickable door into a wall.
Secure the basement, fire-escape, and ground-floor windows burglars favor.
